Welcome to Year 5!
Our teachers this year are Miss Roberts, Miss Hayward and Miss Magowan.
This term our topic is:
'The World and Beyond.'
We will be looking at Space and learning all about the planets in our Solar System and about astronauts who have ventured to the moon. In the next few weeks we will be going to Swindon Academy to learn more about our topic.
Fantastic trip to Swindon Academy for a 'Science Spectacular!'
On Thursday 19th June, Year 5 spent the day at Swindon Academy. It was a Science day all about Space.
First we investigated which materials would keep an astronaut cool or warm in space. Then we entered an exciting space dome where images of planets, stars and constellations were projected onto the walls. Finally we created a robot that could travel across the surface of a planet. We had to test it and discuss what was good and any improvements we could make.
At the end of the day we were treated to a science demonstration about gases, that included: exploding balloons, freezing bananas and changing the colours of liquids.
All in all, a brilliant day for Year 5.
Skype Session with school from Chile.
On Tuesday 10th June, some of Year 5 held a Skype session with a school from Chile. We talked to each other about what we had investigated about the water crisis in Africa. We presented what we had found and also asked each other lots of questions. Below are some photos of our conversation.
Trip to the 'Earth Summit.'
On Monday 19th May, Year 5 had a fantastic trip to Coles Hill for 'The Earth Summit.' We learnt all about helping the environment. The different workshops included: Sustainable Energy- Wind Turbines, Healthy Eating- Fresh vegetables and herbs, Habitats- Woodland environment and Travelling to school- What is the best way to travel to school to help the environment?

Stars of the Week
Reading Records: We ask that children read every night for about 20 minutes. Their book must be signed by an adult. There is a reward scheme this year that entitles you to a certificate and a mini prize for every 25 nights of reading.
PE Kit: Children need to have a suitable PE kit with them every day. This should include- trainers, jogging bottoms or shorts, a white t-shirt and a jumper. It is advisable that children bring in sun cream and a hat as we draw closer to the Summer and hopefully warmer weather.
If you have any questions, I am always available outside on the plaza after school. For urgent queries, please contact the office.
